Books For Haiti program delivers Electronic Library

By Bob Ende

On March 15th, my daughter Tenaya and I arrived in Haiti, backpacks brimming with Kindle eReaders. Our goal: create Haiti’s first “Electronic Library”, giving students who had a few dusty books on the shelves of their school library access to millions of digital books via the Internet.

You may already know about the SOPUDEP School and its wonderful Director, Madame Réa Dol. SOPUDEP has been supported by the Solidarity With Haiti Organization at Los Altos High School and by our local Rotary Club.

Our program, Books for Haiti, is sponsored by the Los Altos Community Foundation and complements those efforts by making e-Reader learning work in a country with unreliable electric power and spotty Wi-Fi. A Field Trial of Kindles in Haiti proved SOPUDEP could download any eBook available on the Internet. Generous donors had provided the Kindles, and we loaded hundreds of French eBooks onto each e-Reader that Réa’s students eagerly awaited.

We taught SOPUDEP students and Staff to use their new Kindles. A real change suddenly occurred — for the first time, a SOPUDEP classroom had a consistent set of (electronic) materials for every student and instructors began teaching their classes with them! Réa summed it up: “Thank you for this beautiful moment with us. We are the only school in Haiti to have access to this new technology. God bless you!”

Visit www.booksforhaiti.com to become a donor. Donations come through the Los Altos Community Foundation, and we thank them for sponsoring us! Every dollar Books For Haiti receives buys an eReader or an eBook. The Ende family pays all overhead costs, so your donation is used with 100% efficiency to change the lives of students in Haiti.

Please join us to learn simple ways to connect with teens and youth. Having caring adults in their lives is critical for our youth and we need your help. This is not a group just for parents. All adults including seniors, neighbors, community members, business owners, and volunteers are welcome and encouraged to join us!
In 2010 Project Cornerstone surveyed students from the Mountain View Los Altos High School District. The survey measured developmental assets, which are the positive values, skills, relationships and experiences that help young people grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible adults. The survey revealed that only 20% of our teens feel valued by our community. Together we can change this!

V-Day/one Billion Rising Day in Los Altos

WOMEN~SV, along with several other women’s groups “convened” the community at Main Street Café in downtown Los Altos, on Thursday , Feb 14,.

And what a huge success it was, thanks to all the wonderful women—and men!! —who turned out to express their idea of what healthy love looks like. It was SRO—Standing Room Only!! —as you can see from the pics:

And the paparazzi were out in full force! Here’s the link to the Patch coverage which includes a brief video clip:

We all shared songs, read poetry, spoke from the heart. And everyone who participated got a rose, thanks to a generous donation from Trader’s Joes.

People are still talking about the spirit of love, solidarity, and connection that filled the room, proving once again there are no strangers at Jaime’s café—only friends we haven’t met yet. In fact it was so successful that Jaimie says we can do it all again next year. Thanks Jaimie! Thanks to everyone who was there that day—in person or in spirit—and who helped us show the world what “true love” really looks like!
