What is the Summer Solstice?

Los Altos Community Foundation’s Summer Solstice Celebration is an elegant garden party held at a large private residence, featuring wine from local vintners, passed appetizers and live music.  The event also is an opportunity for those in the community to learn more about the Foundation’s work and volunteer opportunities.

The event is from 5:30-8:30pm on June 23rd.  This year, the Solstice will be held at the Wayman residence in Los Altos Hills.  This estate was formerly known as the Adobe Creek Lodge.

The Solstice is attended by upwards of 250 guests, many of whom are among the most affluent and influential members of our community.

Former LACF Board Co-Chair Claudia Coleman named 2016 Los Altan of the Year

Claudia Coleman PhotoThe Town Crier has named Claudia Coleman, a longtime resident who has held leadership positions at the Los Altos Community and El Camino Hospital foundations, 2016 Los Altan of the Year.

Modeled after Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, the Town Crier’s annual honor recognizes a resident whose volunteer work generates goodwill and forwards Los Altos’ reputation as an outstanding community.

From the Los Altos Town Crier

Claudia has been involved with LACF since 1996, participating in LACF’s first Leadership Education Advancement Class (LEAD).  Since then she has contributed actively as a member of the LACF board and has served as program manager for the LEAD since 2009.

She is currently a member and past-chair of the El Camino Hospital Foundation Board. She previously served on the boards of the American Red Cross and Pilgrim Haven, now known as The Terraces of Los Altos.  Claudia was recognized for her volunteerism by Los Altos-Los Altos Hills Joint Community Volunteer Service Awards and the John W. Gardner Award .

Thanks for your dedication to your community, Claudia. From your friends at LACF.

Become a Los Altos LEAD er

  • New to the area or lived here for years?

  • Retired?

  • Civic staff?

  • Contemplating running for City Council or School Board, or serving on a Commission?

Then Los Altos LEAD is perfect for you! Enrollment is open to all. Since 1996, more than 220 people have completed the eight-session course.

Subjects presented:

  • local government
  • education
  • social services and health
  • arts
  • community service organizations.

Volunteer opportunities are always highlighted, and one session is devoted to team building and leadership training.

CEO’s, Executive Directors, community & school district leaders will present their organizations over a five month period. They will discuss how they are an integral part of the community as well as participate in candid conversations on the challenges and obstacles upon which they are focused.

The program kicks off with a three hour Saturday morning workshop where class attendees meet each other, expectations are discussed and a dynamic leadership discussion is facilitated. It is followed by nine sessions meeting Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm twice a month.

I strongly recommend the LEAD class for anyone looking to learn more and potentially get involved with our wonderful community. Each session offered a fascinating look at the inner workings of some part of our community. I have never been exposed to so many dedicated people. It was a stimulating and eye-opening experience.

John Radford, Councilmember, Town of Los Altos Hills, and 2011 LEAD graduate.

LEAD 2015 will start in January and will be coordinated by LACF Board Co-chair Claudia Coleman.

Contact LACF for registration details: info@losaltoscf.org or call: (650) 949-5908

Sessions are held at LACF, 183 Hillview Avenue, in the Neutra House, except for four sessions held at offsite locations tbd.

The LEAD Program (Leadership Education ADvancement Program) was developed by the Los Altos Community Foundation as a vehicle to introduce participants to the multiple private and public organizations in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View that make our cites and surrounding areas a community.

First Friday Fundraiser on July 13th

First friday fundraiser at Nature Gallery Los Altos
Carol Garsten, owner of the Nature Gallery, is hosting an exclusive wine tasting fundraiser to benefit the First Friday program.  Proceeds will be used to hire a part time person to coordinate First Friday planning and execution.  As you may know, First Fridays promote community building by enabling residents to socialize, enjoy time together, and dine in our unique downtown while getting to know the merchants and their businesses.  Joe Eyre started the First Fridays in 2011 and would like to pass the reins to a new person so he can focus on LACF.

The event, from 6-8pm, features a wonderful sommelier pouring a selection of exclusive wines, delicious hors d’ oeuvres, and a silent auction.

Attendance will be limited to the first 50 who RSVP.  You can sign up by sending a check to the Los Altos Community Foundation (note First Fridaybenefit) in the memo line or by paying online.  For questions, contact Carol at the Nature Gallery,  at 650-327-8700.

First Fridays are organized by Los Altos Forward, a volunteer group dedicated to promoting vibrancy in our downtown.  Los Altos Forward is a program of the Los Altos Community Foundation,l
