What’s Your Emergency Preparedness Plan for 2019?

The smoke from the recent fires around the state has cleared, but the need to prepare for similar emergencies in our community is always important.

The start of the New Year is a great time to assess your personal and family readiness should a disaster occur. The good news is that much emergency preparedness work has been done by the City of Los Altos and LACF Block Action Team leaders around the community.

The City Emergency Plan and other information is posted on the City of Los Altos website and offers lots of good information for residents and their families.

Evacuation Routes

You should identify two to three potential evacuation routes away from your home. Consider different roads/freeways and alternate destinations. Since we can’t predict when a disaster will occur, where/what roadways it will impact, and what damage it will cause, it’s important to have multiple routes to safety.

Evacuation Notices & AlertSCC

Should a disaster strike, local governments will distribute evacuation notices through as many channels as possible, including TV/radio/social media. The quickest tool they will use is AlertSCC that sends messages directly to your mobile phone.

All residents should register for AlertSCC. Or to simply use text messaging, send your zip code to 888777. You can register multiple zip codes using multiple emails.

Another handy tool is “ReadySCC”. Santa Clara County designed this free, easy-to-use downloadable app to guide you through the emergency prep process from creating a family communications plan to how to predefine evacuation routes and other activities.
